This year, to say the least has been a challenging one for many people and for many different reasons. I struggled as an artist with the inspiration and motivation to create anything. It's been by far, the year that I created the least paintings. What I did find very comforting through this time was reading books. I read a novel by Jeanine Cummins, called "American Dirt". It's about the horrific and treacherous journey a mother and young son take from southern Mexico up North to the United States via "la bestia" the train that travels from south to north. It's a desperate way for many immigrants to get to the USA to try and escape the corruption and danger from their country for the hopes and possibilities of a better life in the US. This book made me cry and also to count our many blessings that we have in this country. The book really put life into perspective and made our complaints like, not being able to buy toilet paper or go out to eat because of covid, seem so insignificant! There was a passage in the book that stood out to me and was the inspiration for this painting. It said this, as Mom and young son, Luca were traveling dangerously on top of the moving train: " " See you in el norte, manito," one of them says to Luca. "Look me up when you get to Iowa. We can have a hamburguesa together." He gives Luca a high-five, and then turns to follow his brother across the top of the train. "
With all the dangers and uncertainty of their destination, Mom and son had to face, it was this image of just being able to be safe across the border and enjoy a hamburger, something we might take for granted, that seemed like paradise. This is what inspired me to create, 'Mi Hamburguesa". In the bottom right corner, I added a train traveling through the night to represent 'La Bestia".

I originally created this series beginning in 2012, when I first moved to South Florida from CO and was eager to visit the restaurant "Le Tub" located in Hollywood, FL that was featured on the Oprah Winfrey Show way back in the day. I had remembered about this restaurant because they were well known for their eccentric and quirky decor, of colorful toilets filled with tropical plants, along the Stranahan River waterway, directly across from the beach. They also were famous for their amazing burgers which I had to try! The experience was a 10 for the food and ambiance! We had birds, landing right next to us on the deck rails along the water as we enjoyed our decadent burgers. It was exactly what I imagined, even though I had never been to Florida before moving here. I left the place feeling very inspired and decided to create the first set of 3 skeletons sitting on toilets and titled them 'Le Tub' as the appropriate title. I also thought, why not create some bright and cheerful art for the bathroom?! Every room, even the bathroom deserves art

I paint skeletons because I believe it is my calling in life. I get endless visions of skeletons and I paint them. I paint the human experience and hope to capture the underlying beauty that connects us all. When others view my work, or the work of other artists, I think they sort of understand these things, consciously or not, whether they understand anything about 'Dia de los Muertos'. They don't really have to, to appreciate all the great art that's coming out. It's about liking it or not. Does the art speak to you?,, does it make you feel something? Does it remind you of a time or place, eating your grandmother's chile? It's art after all. I'm incredibly grateful these days to be able to share my art with others and to be considered a part of 'Dia de los Muertos' phenomenon is really special.”
