I used a black and white photo of Frida Kahlo as a reference, then filled around her my own inspirations. One of them being a butterfly with a broken wing (right corner). One day as I was painting this Frida, I saw a butterfly inside the pool. After I rescued it, I was sad to discover that it had a broken wing and would never fly again. I felt sad. I held it for awhile then put her down in a plant outside. I spent the next few hours checking on her until she was gone. It's the little things that touch me somehow and I related this feeling to the life of Frida. I felt like it was a sign from her. She was very broken herself, not only physically but emotionally too. But despite her suffering, she had an enormous capacity to LOVE. Love was expressed in her being, her presence and her art. She was human; perfectly imperfect. Her life message speaks to me today and that's why I continue to paint her. She inspires many!
